Movie Review : Dallas Buyers Club

It is 1985 and AIDS is making news the world over. At this time, there was very little understanding of the disease and those inflicted with the HIV virus were treated as outcasts out of simple ignorance. The medical community was at a loss to provide any real answers and the average person was being fed different information almost weekly. They were terrible, dark days. But the big pharmaceutical companies were already rubbing their hands together in glee….. because fatal disease = money for these greedy corporations.

Ron Woodruff (McConaughey) is a good ole boy from Dallas, Texas. He is also a womanising, homophobic, cocaine snorting, part-time bull riding, con man who is well-known to authorities. This guy is basically an absolute wanker. Injured one day at his workplace, he is taken to hospital where he is diagnosed with HIV and given 30 days to live.

Movie Review : The Wolf of Wall Street

Based on the movie’s protagonist Jordan Belfort’s memoir of the same name, this is the latest Scorsese / Di Caprio collaboration (there have been 4 others) and has been nominated for a slew of Oscars this year, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. Not too shabby but this IS Scorsese after all.

Is it 1987 and Jordan Belfort is a driven and ambitious young man. Declaring that he ‘always wanted to be a stockbroker’ and after no luck working for others, he and his new BFF Donnie Azoff (Hill) decide to start-up their own firm. Belfort is a born talker and could, as they say, sell ice to Eskimos. All it takes is some balls, a dubious press article (yes I know but this is the decade of greed, boys and girls) and his fellow scumbags and beating down his door to work with him.

Movie Review : Mud

Ellis (Sheridan) and Neckbone (Lofland) are 14-year-old best friends who find a boat on one of the small swamp islands along the Mississippi River. This boat is stuck high up in a tree, the perfect hiding place for a man on the run for murder. And that’s exactly who they encounter. Mud (McConaughey) is a fugitive, wanted for the murder of his on/off girlfriend Juniper’s (Witherspoon) most recent lover. He did it, he is guilty, so that is not what this movie is about.

The boys agree to help Mud fix the boat so he can continue to evade the law. They also agree to become go-between for Mud and Juniper, who has recently arrived in town. Juniper’s arrival is closely followed by the family of her murdered lover who are out for revenge. Ah yes…. the tangled webs we weave.
