Movie Review: Fast & Furious 6

The crew is back…..

After their last big heist, Dom (Diesel) and Brian (Walker) are very rich, settled and happy but unable to return home. The rest of the crew is also faring very well but all it takes is a call from Dom and they are back in business. Dom is visited by Government agent Hobbs (Johnson) and offered an opportunity to find Letty (Rodriguez). Well Hobbs want them to help nail a bad guy but that’s secondary to Dom….. and Hobbs knows it. Dom assembles the old gang and they will help Hobbs on one condition…..they are all pardoned.

Hobbs is after super tech savvy bad guy Shaw (Evans) who possesses a microchip that has the capacity to shut down the power in entire cities. That’s a pretty powerful weapon to have and for obvious reasons, should not be in the hands of bad guys. Hobbs and his partner Riley (Carano) set the crew up with everything they need to help nab Shaw. But at this point a fatal flaw is discovered…. the bad guys can shut down electrical circuits and cars are run on microchips etc etc these days…… you see where I’m going with this, don’t you? YEAH!!! The old classic cars are brought back in and tweaked to perfection.

For the next 2 and a bit hours, we are treated to a high-octane, high-powered, fast paced action movie. There is barely a moment to catch your breath before the next action sequence takes place. And during these 2 hours, you need to suspend disbelief and just get into the movie. There are some stunts that are just so absolutely absurd they you can only marvel at the audacity of the script writers and you know what……….. they work. They are over the top and extreme but they are exactly what you have come to expect from this money-making franchise.

The story is not to bad. It is engaging and there is a twist that no-one saw coming and elicited a huge gasp from the audience. By the way, as always with this franchise, the audience is split pretty much 50/50 boy/girl ratio. There is enough action and cars for the boys and enough eye candy and cars for the girls. It’s a pretty good date movie 😉

Diesel and Walker are not the best actors in the world. Yes, that is possibly a very generous statement but let’s face it, no one is going to see this movie to pick the next Oscar nominees are they? But they are good enough. They are backed by a good cast, including the very funny Roman (Gibson) and Tej (Ludacris). These 2 share some wonderful screen moments and some hilarious one liners. Roman’s tips on how to remain a millionaire and laugh out loud funny.

This movie features the longest airstrip in the history of the planet. You will know what I mean when you see the movie. This runway goes on and on and on and on and on and on …… We see some of the most amazing stunts and remember to suspend disbelief throughout.

I went to see this movie to enjoy myself… see hot men and fast cars and some great action. And that is exactly what I got. It brought nothing really new except it may have taken car chases to new levels…. absurd and completely unbelievable is a new level, right?  The camera work is dizzying and the pace never lets up. It is go, go, go from start to finish.

Diesel has done an excellent job of resurrecting what was a tired franchise so go and see this movie. It is great fun and well worth the price of a ticket. There are a few twists that leave the way open for Fast & Furious 7 but we will see. ….

Thank you to Event Cinema Glendale for inviting me to this preview screening…..
